Program notes

Mirror Box Reflections is the second transformation of the composition Mirror Box (Flesh+Prosthesis #3). The first one, Mirror Box Extensions, for 7 musicians, live-electronics and live-video, is not only literally an extension, but also thematically and conceptually. It deals with the very idea of extensions in the context of mediation and hybridisation of bodies and spaces. To do so it extensively expands the original piece, adding video and staging.

Mirror Box Reflections is closer to Mirror Box (Flesh+Prosthesis #3) (there are no other media used), but takes another perspective on the idea of the hybridisation of the instruments through the use of dynamic amplification. Each musician controls its amplification through a volume pedal. Three of the instruments (bass flute, bass oboe and bass clarinet) are amplified through miniature microphones placed inside the instruments. From a certain amplification level onwards, a feedback-loop will thus start -like an infinite reflection in a mirror box. This feedback can then be manipulated through different fingerings of the instrument and its position towards the speakers.
